Rosemary is a lovely aromatic herb that has been extensively used in traditional societies as a folk remedy against hair loss. It has needle-like, dark green leaves and delicate blue flowers. The name “rosemary” is believed to be derived from the Latin language, meaning “dew of the sea”. Since the herb is native to the Mediterranean region, it indeed thrives in the salty, calcium-rich soils of dry costal areas.

Due to its strong, pungent, but undeniably pleasant flavour, rosemary is famous for its hair-conditioning properties. People of Italy, France, and Northern Europe often use this herb in refreshing hair rinses and even put several dry sprigs under the pillow to have pleasant night’s dreams and promote the growth of new, healthy hair!

Rosemary is used to combat the fall of hair, stimulate the growth of new locks, strengthen hair roots, support hair follicles, eliminate dandruff, and clean the scalp and hair of impurities. Both fresh and dry plants can be utilized successfully to make hair-friendly water or spirit infusions to use as aromatic hair conditioners, splitz, or beneficial rinses. In addition, home-made rosemary vinegar, as well as rosemary oil, can be applied to the hair roots or used in different other ways to stop hair loss.

When you buy or harvest rosemary, refrigerate fresh sprigs for several days in a plastic bag, or just place their stem ends in water. To dry, hang fresh herbs in a warm, dry, and preferably slightly windy place, before transferring into cotton bags for a long-term storage.

Both fresh and dry rosemary is very effective for making various herbal infusions that can be used to benefit your hair. Rosemary oil is even more effective to fight hair loss and especially eliminate dry dandruff, than water-based rosemary infusions. In season, when rosemary is inexpensive and plentiful, make several bottles of this wonderful oil to use throughout the year. Extra-virgin, cold-pressed olive oil is extremely helpful as a scalp and hair-nourishing substance; it also lends itself most naturally to a rosemary infusion. Fresh herbs are the best to use in the preparation of rosemary oil, but dry rosemary can do the work, too. To make the oil at home, wash and dry a handful or two of fresh rosemary sprigs, rub them lightly between your palms to release the flavour, and place them in a clean bottle (you can also add several slices of fresh ginger to intensify the flavour and medicinal qualities of rosemary). Pour extra-virgin olive oil to cover the herbs, seal tightly, and leave in a dark cupboard for at least two weeks. To use, massage some rosemary oil into your scalp and hair and leave overnight for the beneficial particles of olive oil, rosemary, and optional ginger to penetrate deep into your hair roots and shafts. Repeat weekly and watch your hair quickly regaining its strength and vitality!

Another way to use rosemary for topical hair applications is to make rosemary vinegar. It is advisable to infuse rosemary only in raw and, preferably, organic apple cider vinegar of the highest quality you can find. Apple cider vinegar has long been praised for its hair-rejuvenating properties. Combined with rosemary, this vinegar makes a super-remedy for dull, weak, and shedding hair. To prepare, fill a clean jar or bottle with fresh or dry rosemary sprigs and pour raw, unheated apple cider vinegar over the herbs to cover them completely. Seal and leave to infuse for at least a fortnight in a dark place, shaking the jar occasionally. You can store ready rosemary vinegar in a dark cool cabinet or a cellar to undergo further beneficial fermentation. Use weekly to make a hair rinse by mixing several tablespoons of rosemary vinegar with lukewarm water and pouring the mixture onto your scalp and hair. This rosemary remedy has a power to completely rejuvenate weakening hair just within a few months!

Sage, also known under its botanical names Salvia officinalis or Salvia salvatrix, is a universal flavouring and medicinal herb, a native of the Northern Mediterranean coast and the American continent. For many centuries, it has been used as a powerful folk medicine to treat a number of health and cosmetic conditions, including hair loss and greying hair. A stimulant and an anti-bacterial plant, it has been traditionally applied to treat indigestion, ulcers, dandruff, bleeding gums, sore throat, fever, and a number of nervous diseases. Traditional Chinese medicine values sage as an herb able to combat liver, kidney, lung, blood, and stomach diseases. Sage infusions are known to cure joint pains, wounds, nervous headaches, excessive perspiration, lethargy, and even measles!

Long ago, miraculous healing qualities of sage were noticed by ancient Greeks, Romans, Native Americans, Arabs, and Asians. Sage was believed to have healing, strengthening, and purifying qualities. Spiritual ceremonies of American aboriginals still include burning sage to “clean” the spirit before it enters supernatural realms. Ancient Arabs praised sage for its curative powers, as a general tonic, and as a medicine for snakebites; Arab women used it extensively to keep their hair dark, thick, and healthy. Smoking sage was believed to cure coughs, chest colds, and asthma. In the Middle Ages, sage was even considered a “cure-all”.

In many cultures, sage has gained a reputation of a miraculous hair medicine. Sage applications were considered the most effective natural therapies to reverse baldness and restore the dark colour of greying hair. In “The Book of Natural Remedies for Ancient Ills” by classical English physician Nicolas Culpepper, we can read that sage preparations were extensively used in antiquity to combat the fall of hair.

Ancient Greek doctor and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides in his famous book “De Materia Medica” mentioned that drinking sage tea could make greying hair restore its black colour, while topical applications of fresh sage juice were able to treat baldness.

According to the book “Sage: The Genus Salvia” by Anthony C. Dweck, common sage is a great hair-toning aid. In order to prepare a toning hair infusion, fresh sage leaves should be brewed in water and then applied to the scalp and hair. To treat alopecia, Anthony C. Dweck recommends to use freshly-made sage infusions as a hair lotion, massaging the brew into the scalp three times a week. These treatments are also said to promote the health of hair and ensure its shiny glow.

The Dweck’s book mentions that sage preparations are particularly good to strengthen the hair roots, stimulate hair growth, and deepen the rich colour of naturally black hair. Historically, elderly African Americans used to make sage tonics for hair applications to maintain their hair strong, black ,and shiny, he writes.

Naturally-occurring volatile oil in sage is, probably, the main ingredient that does miracles to support the strength of hair.

Sage preparations work especially good when combined with rosemary - another traditional hair remedy. A very beneficial hair lotion can be made from equal parts of sage and rosemary leaves slowly simmered in water for several minutes and then steeped, covered, for a few hours. The brew should be rubbed into the scalp and hair every night as a wonderful strengthening medicine to fight hair loss, rejuvenate the hair follicles, maintain the colour, and ensure the growth of thick, healthy locks.

Tea tree oil has been around for a very long time, since about the 1800's, but has recently found its way into many hair products. It is one of the most beneficial ingredients used in hair care today. This extract is a derivative of the melaleuca tree in Australia. It is superb for cleaning out the hair follicle and promoting hair growth, more so than many of the other products on the market today. Occasionally people have an irritated scalp caused by bacteria or other irritants and this product can assist with healing the effects of harmful bacteria or hair products.

In terms of hair product tea tree oil can prevent and help with bacterial and fungal infections to the scalp. This has a direct benefit to hair, especially ethnic hair since many harmful products may have been previously applied. A solution to this is to apply the tea tree product which is perfect for restoring dry or damaged hair. Tea tree mixed with a combination of other oils can prevent scalp infection and dandruff as well. One must think of the extract like medicine. There are different concentrations of this chemical found in various products.

What you generally see in industry are hair products that contain approximately two percent concentration tea tree oil. However, if this oil product is used it will maintain healthy hair. By nature, it is a potent antiseptic. It is also good to note that it is not irritating to the skin like chemicals found in other products. It is also known for cleaning out the sebaceous glands on the scalp. This is desirable to most people. The net result is healthy hair, irritation free, and can be more easily worked with. And when you are styling ethnic hair, it certainly helps. Other hair products that contain tea tree oil are root stimulator, conditioner, shampoo, wax, and oils, as well as other ethnic hair products. All of which contribute to overall ethnic beauty. In summary through the usage of the tea tree oil in the right proportion you can achieve superb hair results and maintain the overall health of your hair.

Hair products containing tea tree oil are generally not too much more expensive than that of the normal variety. Only about forty percent more cost, but the benefit to your hair is fantastic. When you invest in these products and apply it to your hair it is an investment that is well worth it.

The key to combing natural hair - SPRITZ!!!

I've been approached several times in the past by people stating that there were unable to comb their natural hair.

The key to combing natural hair is to NEVER comb it dry.

I only comb my hair with a wide tooth comb after it has been freshly washed and then it is loaded with either a moisturizing conditioner for detangling or a leave-in conditioner and moisturizer (post detangling) in preparation for a styling session.

But, I you want to comb your hair while dry, the key is to use a spritz to reset your hair. I use a spritz mix of natural conditioner, castor oil, and water.

I separate my hair with the tail end of a styling tool such as a rat tail comb, pick or application brush. If I encounter a tangle during the process, I gently remove it using my fingers.

My recipe for a homemade spritz mix includes:

A 8 oz spray bottle (Walmart/Target Health Care Section)
2 tbsp Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose Conditioner
2 tbsp Castor Oil
Warm Water
10 drops of essential oil (optional)

You can add more conditioner or oil based on your preference. Many people prefer distilled water but I prefer warm tap warm because I helps the products blend. Essential oils can be added if preferred for fragrance, as a preservative, or their growth stimulating properties. The conditioner itself contains perservatives so if I add essential oils it's usually for fragrance or growth stimulation. If you are looking for growth stimulants, peppermint, rosemary, and ylang ylang are all touted to stimulate growth.

Anybody that knows me knows how much I love my Aubrey Organics conditioners. But honey I’m here to tell you, Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner gives my Aubrey Conditioners a run for the money.

Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner is truly a miracle conditioner. I can cover my entire my head with a very small amount, which is the first miracle. It spreads quickly, provides lots of slip, and gives my hair uber moisture. It also has a foaming property that is hard to describe. The fact that Elucence can be used as a one minute rinse out, deep conditioner, and a leave-in conditioner is an added bonus.

I’ve have now used Elucence a total of four times. The first time I used it in my hair I was able to part my hair with my fingers so easily that it was truly shocking to me. Keep in mind that after my transition, Aubrey HSR was the only conditioner that allowed me to comb through my hair with ease so for me to part my hair with my just my fingers using Elucence was truly a miracle # two.

After three uses, I honestly have to admit that I think I can give up my precious Aubrey (except for use in my homemade spritz). It takes a lot for me to admit that considering that Aubrey is truly my first love. I haven’t yet had time to try Elucence with a heat cap but I am sure that I won't be disappointed.

The only downside to Elucence that I see in my future is that I am not able to get it on the ground. But, if I can get it $20 for a liter with a Naturally Curly discount code I’ll snag at least two at a time to make it worth the cost of shipping.

Steps to a Successful Transition to Natural Hair and a Regimen for Those Already Natural

I hear a lot of people say that the products that worked for them while relaxed didn't worked for them after going natural. This article will provide both natural and mass market alternatives for transitioners.

The first thing you should invest in is both a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I recommend Aubrey organics Honeysuckle Rose shampoo and conditioner as a natural alternative and both Suave tropical coconut conditioner and Herbal Essence Hello Hydration mass market. But, trial and error will help you to figure out what makes your hair thrive. Most naturals tend to stay away from shampoo because they strip the moisture from your hair and as a natural, we need all the moisture we can get. I personally follow the no poo regimen. Every week, I cleanse my scalp using conditioner only, which is referred to as a conditioner wash or cowash. If I need an extra cleansing, I add a little baking soda to my conditioner wash. It will take a while to get use to using condition only to cleanse your scalp because we have be brainwashed into thinking our hair isn't clean without suds and squeaky clean hair but you'll get used to it.

Never rinse out all of your conditioner and ALWAYS use a leave-in conditioner. As a natural, I've used Giovanni Direct Leave-in from the health food store as well as Alba leave-in but my favorite is by Kinky Curly Knot Today. I've recently began using Yes to Cucumbers Daily Hydrating Hair Care Conditioner as my leave-in. You can purchase Alba, Giovanni, and Kinky Curly at most Whole Foods and Alba and Giovanni at the Vitamin Shoppe. Yes to Cucumbers can be found at select Target and Walgreens. A Mass market leave-in that i've read good things about is Herbal Essence.

Next, you'll need a good moisturizer. This will be the MOST important part of your regimen. You will HAVE to keep your new growth moist during your transition. Moisturizer is key to keeping your hair soft and manageable. It will also help to prevent breakage at the line of demarcation (the line where the natural and relaxed hair meets). There are a lot of good natural hair care lines that can be ordered online. My personal favorite is Qhemet Biologics Alma/Olive Heavy Cream mixed with the Olive/Honey Hydrating Balm. Another that I really like is Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Cream. Mass market products that I've heard good things about include Organic Root Stimulator Olive Cream and Profectiv, which both can be purchased from Sally Beauty Supply. Hopefully, someone will post some recommendations in the comment section below. Remember that items containing mineral and petroleum are said to block out moisture and clog pores so it is recommended that you stay away from those.

Next, you will need an oil to seal in your moisturizer. I'll suggest avocado oil, castor oil, or olive oil. These are the only three oils that actually penetrate the hair shaft and soften the hair. All other oils sit on top of the hair. You can get olive oil at any grocer or walmart. It's best to get avocado oil and castor oil at the health food store. You can get a big bottle of castor oil for a low price but avocado oil is pretty expensive. A lot of the mass market oil blends like Hot Six Oil are pure oil so ALWAYS read the ingredients.

Next you will need a styler, I use natural gels like kinky curly knot today, Aubrey Organics Mandarin Magic Moisturizing Gelly, and Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel as well as creamy natural stylers like Ohm Body Sweet Hair Pudding. Mass market, people swear by eco styler gel as well as Sparkle-lites and several curl activator gels from the local beauty supply store.

During my transition I wore my hair wrapped the first couple of month until the roots got too thick. After that, I started setting my hair with two-strand twists for twistout wavy styles. You can do the same with single braids (plaits) for braidouts.

Braidouts, Twistouts, cornrows, flat twists, rollerset and other transitioning styles help blend the natural and relaxed hair textures. Heat can damage the new growth if not utilized properly so I chose to avoid heat but that's a personal choice. Many people choose to press their hair weekly press or opt for a Dominican blowout and flat iron style.

With Winter fast approaching in North Carolina, a cold weather healthy hair care regimen that I recommend includes:

Cowash (Yes to Tomatoes)
Deep condition with heat (AOHR, Elucence MBC, or Yes to Cucumbers)
Apply leave-in (Yes to Cucumbers)
Moisturize (Qhemet AOHC mixed with OHHB)
Twist/braid set while wet using styler (AO MMHMJ or OHM SHP)

Because I am already natural, as added step, I ALWAYS seal my ends with castor oil, which is especially important in the cold weather months due to the various coats, hats, scarves, sweaters that your ends may come in contact with on a daily basis.

When my single strand knots get out of control I'll coat my entire hair strand.

I immediately felt the the tangles in my hair melting away upon impact while detangling with my finger. I put my hair in four sections and continued detangling with my Conair Shower Comb. I found the product to be pretty moisturizing providing just the right amount of slip for my personal need. The texture is a mix between my three favs, which are honey suckle rose, island naturals, and white camelia. Honeysuckle Rose will remain my favorite for a deep conditioning treatment but for a nice quick rinseout with a protein boost, you can't go wrong with this one.

Review

I don't consider myself to be protein sensitive but this stuff is horrible.

The technique that I used to apply it was on soaking wet hair over leave-in conditioner. Next, I applied Qhemet Biologics alma/olive heavy cream mixed with olive/honey hydrating balm. I added an addition step of moisture with my holy grail Ohm Sweet Hair Pudding moisturizing softhold styler.

By the end of the week, the ends of my hair felt like straw and just a simple running my finger across the end of my braidout caused major snapping. There were bits and peices of short hair every where I looked each time I put my hands in my hair.

Two weeks have passed and and I'm still trying to get my moisture balance back right.

I currently have a near 24-hour deep treatment in my hair so I don't yet know what the day will bring.

What I do know is Iwill NEVER use this crap again.

Update: Tuesday September 8, 2009 - After my 24 hour deep treatment, I applied Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-in immediately followed by Castor Oil. Next, I applied Qhemet Biologics Amla/Olive Heavy Cream and Olive/Honey Hydrating Balm. I braided my hair using Qhemet Biologics Honey Bush Tea Gel.

My hair felt amazing today when I took down my two day old braids. Very moisturized and my ends feel great.

There is nothing like this product combination to bring dry hair back to life.

If you are a fan of hair butters, you will probably love this product because it is the texture of a thick creamy butter.

The product has a very pleasant fragrance that is rich but subtle. It had great hold for a two-strand twist setting but my hair requires a bit more moisture. I had already used a natural leave-in conditioner under the product. I probably could have gotten better results if I had used a creamy moisture on top of the leave-in.In addition, I'm not a fan of waxes so I could have passed on the Emulsifying and Candelilla waxes.

If you are fan of butters, I ask that you give the product a try for yourself because we all know that different heads of hair thrive on different things.

What would you like the natural hair community to know about Sonya?

I am one of the coolest, laid back people you could ever meet! I'm a single mother of 1 awesome 10 year old boy. I work full time as a debt collector, and part time as a skiptracer & repo woman. I dont really meet any strangers. Some years back I started saying hello to each and every person I met (because I was really shy), after that I would stop at least 1 person a day to compliment them (ya know, just pay it forward). Since then I think I've become a bit more outgoing and extroverted. I love to see people smile, so I do my best everyday to make that happen!

What motivated you to start your own online retail store?

Well, I went natural August 21, 2007. From that point I became a lot more mindful of how I took care of myself. I frequented several hair boards each and every day for tips and pointers. Everyone was looking for their own "holy grail" product lists, so I would buy as much as I could afford to get perfect hair & skin. I tallied up my receipts and realized that I had spent hundreds of dollars on products and the great majority did NOT meet my expectations. Everything was so expensive. My hair and skin was becoming high maintenance & I didn't like that. I started by trial & error making my own "concoctions" that would double as hair & skin moisturizer (just to try and save some money). I started giving jars away to my mom & best friend and they loved it. One morning, while playing kitchentian, I just felt a sense of peace & I felt so excited all of a sudden. I just felt the phrase, "if it's meant to be, everything else will fall into place." I called my mama and she said, "I think it's time to start your company." What I had was my "Epiphany" and what she gave was my "Confirmation." I started giving out more samples and I got really good reviews, and "Epiphany Frostings" was born.

What will one find at Epiphany Frosting?

I feel that each and every person who tries "Epiphany Frostings" will find something they can appreciate in it. You will find a product that looks like whipped frosting, but feels like silk against your skin. It doubles as both a hair and skin moisturizer. Most of the women that I meet are looking for something to give the perfect amount of moisture and shine but doesn't cost an arm and a leg.. No one likes cluttered closets, so with this product you get everything you're looking for all in one jar. It's something the whole family can use. I'm also offering a muscle and joint rub that may not cure your pain, but it will help to lessen the pain. I'll also offer a Total Body Care Oil again that can be used from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet. Where do you hope to see the store a year from now?

A year from now, my goal is that "Epiphany Frostings" will be a household name. I want to know that people everywhere are using my product and their skin and hair is thriving because of it. I would love to be able to focus my attention full-time to the creation and preparation of new products. I plan to also expand my product line to offer all natural hair & body shampoos and conditioners and to also offer bath salts and soaps.

Anything else you’d like the readers to know?

No tree nuts will be harmed in the making of these products! lol I am severly allergic to nuts as well as so many others in the population. It can be daunting to find a product that doesn't include nut oils or butters. Because I want everyone to love this product as much as I do, each batch is made just the way you want it. This is like my baby. Everything I do is by hand, no mass production, so if you have a specific allergy and you express that to me, I will definitely take that into consideration when you place your order.

For me, a true test of a fabulous moisturizer is one that it not greasy and that you can still feel at least three days later. The aloe butter frosting that I tried was all that and more. I had Sonya blushing when I told her that the whipped texture very much reminded me of Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Cream. Of course, Sonya found that statement to be quite flattering.

When I first received my sample, I quickly opened it and the energizing smell of mint flooded the air. I was so tempted to dig in to the product for use on my old twists but waited until the weekend to use it on a fresh set of twists over alba leave-in conditioner and castor oil to seal in my moisture. I air dried and later used my homemad spritz to moisten and the fabulous frosting to twists. A moisture test for me is to squeeze my twist and see if I feel and see moisture on my fingers. With Sonya's frosting, I was still able to feel and see the moisture on day three, which was wonderful.

What is it that the online Natural Hair community should know about you?
Hi, I’m Ekua, pronounced (eh-kwee-ah) even though most people say (eh-koo-ah). It’s an Akan (Ghana) name for a Wednesday born female. Now that the name curiosity is out of the way... lol….

In general, I’m just a woman trying to navigate through this thing called life and have fun in the process. I’ve been described as that cool sister that people would like to have. I think that comes from a combination of things, like my humor, my loyalty, my insight and keen intuition, and my protective ways. For me, I just like helping people and if I’m not helping, then I don’t feel like I’m serving my life’s purpose. I want people to be better from having known me. That’s how I operate my life.

I’ve been natural for over a year now. It’s been an interesting experience of personal rediscovery. Learning your natural hair truly is a journey, sometimes sweet, sometimes frustratinG. Although I have a ways to go, I already know that I’m committed to my natural hair for life. I really have come to love my hair and in that, I’m loving myself even more.
Oh yeah, I’m also married, mother of one handsome son, and I own a smart, but crazy Jack Russell terrier… she’s barking at a neighbor right now… lol

What motivated you to start your own online retail store?
The experiences and stories of women on various hair boards.

I’ve only been on hair boards since late last year. I lurked a lot at first before becoming active. From then until now, no matter what hair board I visit, there’s this common reoccurrence of women who would love to try ayurvedic and herbal products from India for their hair and skin, but they don’t have local access to a store that sells them. Many of these women report that most online alternatives have been either unaffordable, didn’t have all of the products they were looking for, or just had poor customer service -- sometimes a combo of things. I felt really lucky to be able to find what I needed locally, but once I experienced how beneficial ayurvedic herbs were to my hair and skin, I started selling a little of my personal stash on the side, just so they could share in the benefits too. The thing is, there is only so much you can get at the Indian stores on ground, and only so many offerings per store, so I knew I wasn’t going to really make a difference.

It’s funny how divine ordinance works. When your intentions are really true, the solution does come. Not even a few days later, I was out trying to refill my own stash after just having sold all that I had to a nice sister online. It was that day I met the person who could give me access to much of what I was looking for. From there I went to work with a partner, doing research, building the store, competitive analysis, and all the other necessary tasks that need to take place before doing business.

Thus AyurNatural Beauty was born. It’s my hope that AyurNatural Beauty will bridge that gap to provide the access, for great prices, with great customer service. It’s really just that simple.

What will one find at AyurNatural Beauty?
You will find popular health and beauty herbal products directly manufactured in India where Ayurveda has been a way of life for thousands of years. I’ve already received a few requests to get in more ayurvedic and herbal oils and additional botanical powders and believe me, I am working on it! Still that may be a while coming. Ultimately, I hope to be a one stop shop, offering access to ayurvedic and herbal product brands as well as herbal ingredients that aren’t widely available, while keeping it all relatively affordable.

I’m working on a blog that will provide news on store updates, specials, and more information about the products that are carried in the store. Yes to Carrots was thick and rich, which was a pleasant surprise. It also had a very pleasant light but fragrant smell.

I love thick conditioners so it felt great going into my hair. I deep conditioned with it for about an hour using a store bought conditioning cap.

This was the first time I've use a conditioner with cones since going natural.

It was probably psychological but my hair felt coated after rinsing with my bands in. So, I removed my bands and re-rinsed section by section.

My hair was very soft and manageable after the final rinse. I immediately applied Beauty Without Cruelty leave-in.

Will I use again? Heck yeah, I have a full bottle. lol. But seriously, it was a great conditioner and a little goes a long way. Bonus, you get 16 ounces for $7.99 and, it's available at select Target, Walgreens and Walmart stores and various others.

My Current Dilema - Broken Hair or New Growth?

I'm currently in the Castor Oil Challenge at Hairlista.com. So, I've been rubbing castor oil into my scalp two and sometimes, three times a week.

Although castor oil is thick and sticky feeling to the hands, it is a nourishing emollient for hair. It assist is helping to maintain moisture. It is also touted toward hair growth.

Two weeks ago, I did my fourth henna treatment. I always follow a henna treatment with a deep conditioning treatment of Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose and Olive Oil.

Last week, I did a pre-poo of conditioner with oil and slept with it over night and most of the next day. After co-washing, I applied a mix of deep conditioning treatment of Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose and Olive Oil. My hair felt great but thinner and more easily manageable while styling.

So, this week, I did a pre-poo and deep conditioned again.

While styling I saw several short sections of hair while styling in one section. It didn't looked damaged at all.

I get an average amount of shed hair while detangling and always see at least a few short hairs due to my styling technique.

I haven't noticed any hair on my clothing and nothing out of the ordinary with my hair.

I have changed my routine recently from Qhemet Biologics Amla Olive Heavy Cream and Olive/Honey Hydrating Balm (Moisturizers) with aloe vera gel (styler) to Ohm Body Sweet Hair Pudding and castor oil. Ohm Body's Sweet Hair Pudding is a base of Aloe, Shea Butter and Castor Oil along with other yummy ingredients so, it's a moisturizer and styler in one.

So, is it shed hair or breakage?

Broken Hair or New Growth

Q: How can I tell if the short hair I see is new growing hair or broken hair?

A: This can often be very difficult to determine, especially if the “short hairs” are in areas where breakage can occur (around the hairline, etc.). Your first task would be to examine the hair closely and look for signs of stress on the hairs – such as split ends, stretching, etc. If there are signs of stress or damage, then breakage is the likely cause. This can be doubly certain in cases where breakage would be expected. For example: an individual wears his/her hair in, say, a tight ponytail and begins to notice short hairs at the forehead and temples.

You also need to consider the condition of your hair. If you regularly subject your hair to chemical processing (color, straightening and/or perming) you are far more likely to experience breakage as these processes can be extremely harsh to the hair and leave it weakened. This is especially true in areas where the hair is stressed by the style worn.

Breakage becomes less likely when the short hairs are found in places on the scalp that aren’t exposed to significant stress from the styles worn. For example if you generally wear your hair loose and parted in the middle, but notice hairs that “poke up” between the other hairs on the scalp that are NOT along the parting, there is a reasonable chance that the hair is simply “new growth” in follicles that have recently shed their hairs.

This new growth of hair will not be found in great numbers. Since only 10% of the hairs on average are in a resting phase at any given time (the rest being in a growth phase) and the hairs are shed following the resting phase as the new hair pushes the old hair out of the follicle, you would generally only see 10% of the hairs on your head as these short, newly-grown hairs. It should also be noted that each individual follicle follows its own cycle of growth, rest and shedding, and these cycles may not be equal in duration.

Regardless of the cause, however, you will want to take care to properly condition and care for the hair to ensure that it can grow in healthy and strong. Remember to condition the hair daily, whether or not you shampoo the hair.

Au Naturale! Natural hair care for beginners

Hair… The crown of our glory and the center of our frustration. A good hair day will have you feeling fly and fierce, but a bad one may leave you down and distressed. Changing your ‘do can impact your entire lifestyle and the transition back to your natural hair can be downright frustrating. Many black females have had relaxers most of their life (including myself) and the first 2 times I reverted back to my natural texture, I didn’t have the capacity to understand that I couldn’t treat my hair the same way. A different mentality is needed all together and once you wrap your head around the fact that Natural doesn’t mean “nappy”, taking care of your hair is a breeze.

Whether you are transitioning to natural hair or have newly crossed over or even if you have been natural for a long time but find that your hair care is lacking, below are a few pointers or principles that all naturals should adhere to:

* Natural Hair Needs Moisture… way more than any other type of hair. As I sit with conditioner in my hair as I type, I cannot stress this principle the most. If you want healthy hair, you need moisture, moisture, moisture. The curlier your hair, the more moisture you need. This is so, because at every twist and turn at the curl is a week spot in the hair, I place where it can break off. Keeping your hair moisturized will limit breakage which will inturn limit the amount of trims or cuts and help with length retention. Detangling your hair should be only on wet and conditioned hair to prevent excessive breakage. Doing styles at night (braids or twist) will also help to keep moisture inside you satin scarf while you sleep.

* Know your ingredients… because the front label does not explain what is inside the bottle. I have gotten used to immediately flipping over the tube and looking through the ingredients. A lot of products marketed for African Americans i.e. grease, contains mineral oil and petroleum. This two ingredients are cheap fillers with unfavorable properties. They clog the pores and stifle new growth. There are other chemicals in hair products that are linked to illnesses like parabens, which unfortunately are in most hair products. Find a hair database that explains the uses of each ingredient in your beauty products. If you don’t like their purpose, I suggest throwing it out. On the flip side of this, find what products make your hair feels the best and what ingredients gives your hair the most moisture. The most abundant ingredient is first on the list, hence you want the moisturizing properties first and the gunk last.

* Stop using Sulphate shampoo… unless you like stripped, dry and suffering curls!! Most shampoos contain Sodium Laurel/Laureth Sulfate (SLS) which is a harsh cleaning agent and it is responsible for soapy lather you find in the shower. Yes, it does clean your hair, but it takes the good moisture out a well. Bottom line, you don’t need it. There other methods one can use to cleanse the hair. A popular methods most curlies use is to conditioner wash. This is to put conditioner in the place of shampoo. It cleans the hair and adds moisture to your hair. If you decide to quit using SLS cold-turkey, you have to be conscious of a few things. SLS shampoos were developed to combat the tough chemical, ingredients in hair products. Therefore, if you want to use alternative methods of cleaning your hair, you must find other methods of conditioning, moisturizing and styling your hair. You don’t want to clog your pores by using heaving products that your conditioner or non-SLS cleanser can remove. Reminder: healthy hair comes from a healthy scalp.

* Everything in moderation... or pay the price in the long run. Your hair has a natural balance and it will remain its healthiest when it is closest to its own equilibrium. That means, you can’t wear your hair in a tight puff everyday and think you won’t have thin edges a couple of months later. That means you can’t have a wash-n-go all the time and not expect knots and tangles ends. Provide your hair with protein along with moisture and vice versa. Don’t overdue a particular technique because your hair will go far left in result.

* Know your hair type… Girlllll you got that good hair!!! Just kidding, there is no such thing. Everyone’s hair is beautiful and remember, the grass is always greener. You need to have an intimate relationship with your hair and getting to know your type and texture will greatly improve how you treat her. The LOIS hair classification system is an intricate description of your hair which will help you to better understand your hair and how it will respond to different products. However, let your hair roam free and do its thing. You have to find hair styles that allow your hair to be healthy and she will remain cooperative in future endeavors.

Most importantly, know that learning your hair takes time. Don’t expect it to look like everyone else because that only leads to more frustration. Embrace your natural texture first and get used to the idea that it will NOT look like the next girl’s hair. Which is good, because who wants to look like the next chick?

Natural Hair Care - BRINGING THE SPA HOME

Every year we spend thousands on hair care products when we could easily create our own treatments using ingredients from our own kitchens that will help us maintain strong, shiny and healthy hair.

Hair is made from a substance called keratin, which constitutes not only our hair but also our nails. Hair grows from follicles on our body that are attached to a sebaceous gland. Sebaceous glands produce sebum, which is a form of oil that nourishes both our skin and our hair. Regular scalp massage will help to stimulate blood flow to our hair follicles, which will help the flow of sebum and increase hair growth.

Once the hair has grown from the follicle or root, it is actually dead. So in order to maintain strong, healthy hair it is important that we have a nutrient-filled, balanced diet. Include plenty of fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, whole grains, seeds and lean protein along with drinking lots of water to hydrate and condition our hair from within.

In Jamaica, we are blessed with an abundance of coconut, which is excellent for our bodies and thus our hair. So the nourishment of our hair really comes from inside out.
We have over 100,000 strands of hair on our heads and we lose approximately 50-100 strands
daily; thus our body is constantly replacing hair.

It is wise to invest in the best quality shampoo that we can afford, avoiding shampoos that contain synthetic chemicals; chemicals which are the same as those used in dishwashing liquid. Though these shampoos lather well, they are also very harsh and tend to dry out our hair. If possible, try to avoid shampoos that contain sodium laureth sulfate.
Products containing decyl glucose or decyl glucoside tend to be gentler on the hair. Most health food stores sell shampoos that contain natural ingredients, which are the most gentle for our hair.

Here are a few natural recipes you might like to try at home.

Sugar Scalp Rub
Ingredients:
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons cold pressed coconut or olive oil

Method
Combine sugar and oil and apply to scalp using only fingertips.
Massage well into scalp using circular movements for several minutes.
Rinse and shampoo as normal.
Note
This is great for those of us who suffer from dandruff. This will stimulate your scalp and also remove any excess oil or residue build-up. It is also excellent for men to stimulate hair growth.

Avocado Coconut Conditioner
Ingredients:
1 large piece of avocado pear
coconut milk
Method
Blend avocado pear with enough coconut milk until it reaches the consistency of a thick hair conditioner.
Apply to damp hair, working well into the ends of the hair.
Cover your head with a steam cap for 20 minutes
Shampoo and rinse after.

Ginger & Olive Oil Dandruff Treatment
Ingredients:
1 large piece of fresh ginger root
1 teaspoon light olive oil
1/2 large lime (juiced)

Method
Press juice from ginger root and mix with light olive oil and lime juice.
Apply to scalp and allow to dry.
Shampoo as normal.

Note
This can be done regularly to eliminate dandruff.

Natural Hairspray
Ingredients:
1/2 Seville orange
1 lime
2 cups water
Method
Cut up citrus into little pieces and add to water in a sauce pot.
Boil until liquid is reduced by half
Let cool then strain.
Put in spray bottle and place in refrigerator.
If mixture is too sticky add a little Witch Hazel.

Note
You will need to make this
regularly as it should be replaced after about two weeks. However, this is far better for the environment and for your lungs.

Spa Elder Tip
To help control frizzy hair naturally, simply remove gel from a piece of fresh aloe vera. Blend into a liquid and work well into your hair. This not only helps control frizz but conditions your hair at the same time.

How to Retain Hair Growth

A healthy person can easily grow 1/8 of an inch of hair every month. Over the course of patiently waiting a few months, it may feel like your hair is not growing.

Pampering your hair and treating it like fine cloth is a great strategy to grow your hair. Your current hair care regimen and hair style may be preventing your hair from retaining length.

Your hair is not going to stop growing, however if you are not keeping the length at the ends, you will never appear to have longer hair. Here are some easy tips to help you retain hair growth.

1. Wear a protective hair style. This is any hair style where you are not manipulating your hair excessively.

2. Wear your hair in a bun, puff, french braid, or ponytail that is not tight.

3. Avoid placing your hair in contact with harsh fabrics. If your shoulder length hair seems not go be growing it could be because it is rubbing against your wool coat for several hours a week while you are commuting. Wear a silk scarf to be a barrier while you are wearing your wool coat.

4. Wear a hair style where you are not combing it everyday. Try two strand twists, three strand twists, box braids, micro braids, roller sets, afros, braid outs, flexi rod sets, and not heat styling.

5. Add water, then oil to the ends of your hair. You want to protect the ends of your hair.

Castor Oil Challenge

I decided to join the 2nd Castor Oil Challenge on Hairlista.com that started on Wednesday April 22, 2009.

Castor oil is said to generate hair growth and thicken the hair.

Lord knows I don't need any more thickness but I'd LOVE to have enough hair for a bun/low ponytail for the summer.

The challenge runs from April 22, 2009 through July 22, 2009.

Based on the results I could find, people were able to grow and RETAIN an average of 1 1/2 to 2 inches of hair in the two month span. Sounds hard to believe in my opinion. LOL

I'm a skeptic that loves a challenge so I can't see a promising healthy, natural alternative to faster route to growth and thicker hair without giving it a try for myself.

There are two levels to the challenge. The first level requires that you apply Castor oil to your scalp two times a week. The advanced level requires that you apply Castor oil to your scalp once per week.

I will be participating in the first level, applying Castor oil to my scalp two times a week.

When I wash my hair tomorrow, I'll take a picture of the length and thickness freshly cleansed and post an update at the end of the challenge.

If I don't get to feeling overly oily and my adult acne stays under control, I'll be able to do it.

I started the challenge two days because I knew I'd be washing my hair this weekend.

So far, using only Ohm Body's Sweet Hair Pudding, which I previous reviewed, and castor oil this past week has resulting in some serious curl popping going on. lol. I'm loving the combination.

Castor Oil

Back in the day, castor oil was used by the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt in an effort to prevent hair loss. It is highly emollient odorless oil and works as a deep conditioner to heal and soften both skin and hair. It is highly recommended to treat both eczema and psoriasis. Castor oil is also a humectant because it both attracts and retains moisture.

Castor Oil is rich in fatty acids and very lubricating so it makes for as excellent hot oil treatment for dry damaged hair. It coats the hair shaft and smooths the cuticle layer to seal in moisture, which leaves hair feeling soft and silky. It absorbs easily allowing deep penetration into the hair shaft. It is very important that you do not overuse Castor Oil if you are prone to oily scalp and hair conditions. A hot oil treatment is recommended monthly, while a weekly moisturizing treatment is useful to restore your hair to peak condition.

Review
Apple cider vinegar is used ro balance the pH of your hair, remove build-up , seal the cuticle, and add shine to make you hair smoother, and easier to manage. This is why I choose to do monthly ACV rinses.

I wash in sections so after I conditioned my hair, I sprayed the product into each section from root to tip. I let it sit for about five minutes. I immediately felt my scalp tingle. As stated, you can leave the product in your hair for extra conditioning benefits but because I prefer to use ACV as a rinse (and that intense tingle (lol)), I rinsed.

Although the product is called "clarifying", I used it as a rinse so I can't say whether or not it works as a clarifier. I didn't rinse it completely out and because my hair was already shampooed and conditioned, I didn't experience any significant cleansing effects.

I'll definitely will continue using the product. Adiva recommends that you use the product once every two weeks so I may move to bi-monthly versus monthly treatments. I will repurchase the product.

Update:
On Sunday May 31, 2009 I finally took time to use the product as a clarifier. I always wash my hair in sections unless doing my monthly henna treatment. I loosed each section and sprayed the product into my scalp and hair. I allowed the product to sat on my hair for 3 - 5 minutes prior to rinsing. I definitely felt a thorough cleansing. It's a wonderful way to clarify the hair without it feeling stripped.

Oh my, where do I start?

It was wonderful.

If given the opportunity, I highly recommend that you experience a natural hair show for yourself. The joy of participating can't be described.

There was an abundance of workshops, natural beauties, haircare services, hair, skin, and makeup products, jewelry, art, books, food, and more...

This was my second year in attendance and I enjoyed this year's show even more so than last.

I had the pleasure of meeting three fellow bloggers, which was joyous in and of itself. These include The world famous and gorgeous CurlyNikki, the stunningly beautiful Naturally Leslie, and the lovely and charming jewel Naturally Sophia (I feel like I've known her a lifetime). The ultimate class was Salon Ownership-Make It Happen, Make It Last with extremely intelligent instructor, Anita Hill. Anita is the owner of Braids and Dreds in Richmond, Virginia. Ya'll, the girl has it going on. The class lasted two hours and covered a very detailed discussion on financial management, earning additional income through retailing, staffing, legal structure, and more. The third and final workshop that I attended was Silki Flatwist led by instructor Ronnie Decoteau of Roni's Artistic Hands. Roni, unfortunately, was not provided with the materials she needed to properly run the workshop and due to that misfortune, She was forced to utilize a mannequin head with no stand to demonstrate the technique. The workshop had a large turnout and because every one was required to stand around a table to view the technique, the view was horrible. I refuse to waste time in an unproductive workshop when I can be using the time more effectively to gain other knowledge so i departed early. Deeply Rooted was putting it down at the right of the main entrance. There were at least six stylist on hand providing discounted services. My personal observation including the stylists doing flat twists, two-strand twists, loc tightening via palm rolling, extension services, cornrows, and comb coils. Second Henna Treatment

I just completed my second henna treatment using Jamila Henna.

I followed Curly Nikki's Henna Pictorial recommendations AGAIN. LOL

This time, I remembered to add the honey and eliminated the olive oil.

I mixed the henna with green tea (2 tea bags & 2 cups of boiled water).

I allowed the henna to sit for approximately 3 hours.

While the henna was releasing, I sectioned my hair using cheap natural conditioner mixed with extra virgin olive oil and put into sections.

I shampooed my hair using Blended Beauty Soy Cream Shampoo.

I conditioned with Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose (my favorite).

I applied my henna in sections using an applicator brush. I coated each section both on top and underneath and stretched the hair from root to end.

Since I had planned a late night sleep-in henna treatment, I wrapped my head in saran wrap using two pieces that were long enough to tie after wrapping.

Next, I rolled a hand towel and wrapped into around the edges of my hair tucking the ends into each other.

Third I applied a shower cap.

Fourth, I tied my head with an cotton scarf (which I would never do on uncovered hair).

I'm heading to best and will post results and images in my fotki hair album later.

Again, the application process is not nearly as tedious as people have led me to believe.

Edited to Add:

I left the henna in my hair for about seven hours.

Rinsed with cool water in the shower.

Shampooed twice with Blended Beauty Soy Cream Shampoo.

Added Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose, Honey, and Olive Oil for a deep condition.

After I got out of the shower, I sectioned using my shower comb and put into afro puffs using scunci elastic bands.

I added a shower cap, two satin bonnets, another shower cap, and tied with a scarf to use my body heat for the treatment.

I left the conditioning treatment in my hair for 30 minutes before rinsing.

Herbs have been used in hair and on the body for the past 500 hundred years. Before there were perfume, people would use herbs to disguise the "stink" odor on those that had not bathe for months. Since it was the norm to not bathe more than twice per year.

Herbs use was as a medical remedy, it was used for everything from A to Z. The persons administering these herbs were once classified as witch doctors. In our modern day herbs are the norm to use and are being used as herbal remedies taken orally or topically. The urge or the need comes from the over use of chemical sand the effects-it as had on society.There are various herbs that are used to combat certain issues .

I will name some in the category in which the work to accomplish the goal that's needed.

Oily hair is the over production of oil, produced by the glands. It protects your hair from breakage and keep your scalp in good condition. However, not everyone likes their hair stringy and looking dirty.

Peppermint,bergemont,witch hazel, basil,rosemary, thyme and lemon grass.

Hair growth is what most women thrive to achieve when caring for their hair. This is possible with the right treatments and the right proceeder's.

Camphor, nettle, sage,lavender,aloe Vera,dandelion and colts foot.

Astringents use to clean the scalp with irritations such as fungal infection, eczema or oily scalp.

Rosemary, tea tree,nettle, sage, peppermint, chamomile, lavender and lemon juice(not a herb but very important)

Hair loss is the most feared occurrence in both male nd female and can be caused by many factors including diseases, not taking proper care of your hair and genetics.

Kelp, nettle, sage, rosemary and thyme.

Moisturizer is any concoction use to add moisture or add hydration to the hair.

Comfrey, chamomile, basil, and lecithin. Use avocado oil, Shea butter or almond with the infused herbs to create a moisturizer.

All these herbs must be infused individually and mix no more than two or three to make hair tonic, it should be left in the hair.

Technical glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is chosen solely by some as it is made from a vegetable base and is used internally by some.

Plain usp glycerin is produced synthetically and uses petro chemicals and can be purchased from any local pharmacy very cheaply.

Technical grade glycerin is produced from three different processes and mainly unregulated.

Although usp glycerin is safe and is in tons of consumer products, it
is distinct from vegetable glycerin. If your product does not
specify 'Vegetable Glycerin' it more than likely is not vegetable
glycerin.

During the past several years, products from China being imported
caused alarm as the news reported that some of these products contained
deadly ingredients.

What are the top five ways to achieve healthy natural hair?

* Always shampoo and condition with a hydrating or moisturizing system. Locs and braids require a cleansing or detoxifying shampoo first, then follow up with a hydrating shampoo. Try a steam herbal conditioning treatment at least once a month. Relaxer shampoo and conditioning systems generally contain too much protein to soften natural hair and are really not the best, unless they are botanical in nature. Natural hair thirst for moisture and humectants.

* Never comb through your tresses while completely dry. Always mist with water first, then apply a light leave-in-conditioner or mist like, Tai Texture Lavender Mist or Jane Carters Solution Revitalizing Leave-in-conditioner.

* Always use a wide tooth wooden or hard plastic comb to dangle and style. This is one of the number one reasons why natural hair breaks--combing through with a fine tooth comb. This is my new favorite product for two-strand twisting. It contains my favorite products all combined into one. My hair thrives on aloe vera gel, butters, oil, glycerine.

I apply the product to small sections of hair concentrating on the roots and ends when two strand twisting. It provides a strong hold but it not at all drying.

I've gotten the best results of a twist set ever. I'm usually frizzy by day three but I have been able to keep twists in for five days and the majority still look fresh.

I tie them down and night and let shower steam and spritz plump them in the morning.

I'm hoping to make it until Friday with this set of twists.

If a product can help my twist to last eleven days, I'm a fan for life.

Natural Preservatives

Essential Oils - Some essential oils can be considered as natural preservatives. This is because of their antiseptic qualities. Ti tree, Eucalyptus and Lavender are probably the most well known oils used in this manner.

Grapefruit Seed Extract - This oil is obtained from the crushed seed of the grapefruit. It is reputed to be a natural antibiotic as well as an antiseptic and disinfectant. This is a safe preservative for use in beauty products that contain water.

Neem Oil - This oil is relatively new on the health scene, but it has been used in India for a long time. It is reputed to be antifungal and antibacterial.

Rosemary Extract - is a powerful antioxidant. It also helps to minimize the oxidation and of some vitamins and amino acids.

Vatika Hair Oil Usage

Take 8-10 ml of oil, depending upon hair length and volume. Apply and massage gently using both the palms and fingers.

Take another 2-3 ml of oil if required. Also apply the oil into the scalp and massage gently using your fingers. The application can continue for 5-7 minutes.

Preferably apply the oil in the night and keep the oil on the hair overnight. In the morning wash the hair with shampoo.

However, if you don't feel comfortable with oily hair, wash the hair after 30-40 minutes.

Apply 2-3 times in a week.

How to Use Henna in Hair

Henna is a popular way to dye your hair. Not only will it add a nice color of red to most hair colors, but it also conditions your hair. Henna is all natural so it will not harm your hair like the dyes found in stores today. Some other benefits of henna as a hair color is that it strengthens your hair, makes it easier to manage, and can even get rid of dandruff.

1. Henna is red in its natural state. With the addition of walnut plant dye or coffee, henna can be brown. With the addition of chamomile, saffron, or senna, you can use henna to dye your hair blonde. If using just the pure henna, blondes will gain a natural red color, redheads will have a boost of color, brunettes will get an auburn color, but those with a full head of grey hair will only get orange hair. If you have ten percent or less grey hair, henna will dye the grey hair so that it looks like highlights.

2. Buy henna from a special store online, a beauty store, or possibly even a Middle Eastern specialty shop. You will need 100 grams of henna if you have short hair, 200 grams for collar length hair, 300 grams for shoulder hair, and 500 grams for waist length hair. You will be able to buy the henna prepared or in a powder which will come with directions on how to prepare.

3. You may want a friend to help you because henna can get really messy. Drape your shoulders with a towel and wear plastic gloves. It is a good idea to do a test on hair from your hair brush before actually dying your hair. Start at the bottom layers of your hair and work your way up. Keep hair not ready to be dyed in a clip on top of your head. Apply the henna paste to thin strips of hair at a time. Apply evenly. Keep doing this until all your hair is covered.

4. Wrap your hair in saran wrap or a shower cap. Now you must wait two to four hours.

5. Rinse your hair with cold water and a good conditioner. This will seal the hair shaft and make it shiny and healthy looking. Rinse until all of the paste is out.

6. Now that your hair is colored with henna, you must avoid any chemical processing and products, such as getting your hair chemically straightened or permed or putting dye in your hair. This will counteract the henna and damage the hair. Your hair can be safely dyed over and over with henna to achieve your desired color.

My First Henna Treatment

I did my first henna treatment this weekend and that straw-like after effect that everyone talks about is nothing but the truth.

I mixed 100 grams of henna with 1 1/2 cups of cool green tea (recommended by Curly Nikki)and olive oil. I forgot to add the honey. I let the henna sit for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I applied the henna with a applicator brush. I left it in my hair of about 5 1/2 hours.

I was able to quickly combat it by doing a deep conditioning treament. I used Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose mixed with olive oil to dentangle and section while wet then left it on for a good 30 minutes after covering with a plastic cap and toboggan.

Prior to the deep conditioning treatment, I rinsed the henna out in the shower and shampooed with Karen's Body Beautiful Shampoo Bar in Juicy.

For moisture, I added Qhemets Biologic Alma/Olive Heavy Cream and Hydrating Balm and sealed with a homemade herb-infused oil.

I could immediately tell the difference in my hair before and after the henna treatment. I had very little shedding.

I'm curious as to whether the hair always feels like straw post henna or does it eventually get used to it. Hmmm!!!

It wasn't nearly as messy or hard to rinse out as people made it out to be.

I love the red highlight that it added to my two tone hair and will begin doing henna treatments every four weeks for three months to see if there is a remarkable difference in my hair as proclaimed by others.

My Moisture Routine

1. Detangle dry hair using conditioner. While detangling, put hair in six sections using cloth covered elastic ponytail bands. I'm currently loving Trader Joes Renew Citrus conditioner.

2. Poo/No poo each section removing bands. Replace bands after rinsing each section. I'm currently experimenting with two shampoo bars; Swastik Shikakai and Karen's Body Beautiful Bodacious Shampoo Bar in Juicy.

3. Condition each section using Conair Shower Comb to distribute conditioner throughout each section. My favorite conditioner is my never fail Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose.

4. Apply leave-in conditioner to each section. My favorite is the discontinued Qhemet Biologics Olive Cream Condtioner and Detangler.

5. Apply moisturizer and oil to each section. Band each section as you go along as this is the the final step pre-styling. I love Qhemet Biologics Alma/Olive Heavy Cream mixed with Olive/Honey Hydrating Balm. I use a mix of oils to seal such as homemade growth oil, coconut oil, and vatika oil.

Olive Oil

There are some benefits of olive oil for hair. It is greenish in colour due to the small amount of chlorophyll present in the flesh from which the oil is extracted. Olive oil has emollient properties which makes it a perfect choice in hair care. Though it is a little heavy for scalp massage but it can be added in 50/50 concentration with some other base oil like, coconut oil, jojoba oil.

Olive oil is also great for Treating Dandruff and Hair Loss and for Controlling Frizz and Creating Shine. Olive oil does two things for your hair: it increases strength and improves overall flexibility.

The penetration level of olive oil is less as compared to coconut oil since the oil is viscid. To promote, lustrous, shiny, thick and beautiful hair, massage olive oil generously on your scalp and leave it overnight. It also helps clear dandruff and stops hair loss.

Herbs for Hair Loss

People have been using herbs for hair loss since ancient times. Herbs, as widely accepted, trigger the body’s natural mechanism to tackle a health-problem. In the case of hair loss (referred to scientifically as Alopecia), the herbal remedies deal with the problem by increasing blood circulation to the area of hair loss, disinfecting the scalp in case of an infection and/or suppressing hormonal activity.

Some time-tested herbs for hair loss are:

Camellia Sinesis, better known as Green Tea is considered a great remedy for male pattern baldness. Catechins found in green tea inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase that converts male hormone Testosterone into hair-unfriendly Di-hydrotestosterone or DTH. Drink Green Tea or take it in the form of capsule to prevent hair loss.

He Shou Wu or Polygonum Multiflorum, a Chinese herb, has long been used as an effective remedy for hair loss. The herb is also known to promote growth of new hair. Also known as Fo-Ti, it is used in many commercial preparations. It is also available in the capsule form.

Horsetail, a good source of silica, prevents hair loss by making the hair (rather follicles) strong. It also enhances the shine of hair. Horsetail can be used with a baby shampoo.

Licorice extract helps prevent hair loss in women. Other effective herbs for women with hair-thinning problem are herbs such as Astragalas and Siberian Ginseng.

Pygeum Africanum or simply Pygeum is extracted from the bark of an evergreen tree. Like Green Tea, Pygeum too slows down the conversion of Testosterone to DTH, which weakens hair follicles. Available in pill forms, recommended dosage for Pygeum is between 60 mg and 500 mg per day.

Saw Palmetto, also known as Seranoa Repens, is among the most popular hair loss treatments presently available for men. Saw Palmetto works by lowering the levels of DTH. Recommended dosage for Saw Palmetto is two 160 mg capsules daily.

Urtica Diocia or Stinging Nettle is the other most popular name among herbs for hair loss when it comes to treating male-pattern baldness. The optimum dosage is 50-100 mg per day. To achieve best results, use Nettle along with Pygeum and Saw Palmetto.

There are many more herbs, which are used to prevent or retard hair loss – Aloe, Arnica, Brahmi, Birch, Bhringaraj, Catmint, Licorice, Marigold, Mulberries, Parsley, Sage and so on and so forth. Herbs for hair loss, however, are selected depending on the reason for hair-loss.

If the hair loss results from dandruff, then the best remedy will be a mixture of Rosemary and Stinging Nettle. If it arises out of stress, you may try Ayurvedic Antistress Tea by mixing equal proportions of Jatamamsi and Brahmi.

Horsetail for Hair Loss

Simply stalling the hair loss will not be sufficient, you will also need re-growth of hair. Herbs like Burdock, Chamomile, Horsetail, Nettle and Rosemary stimulate hair-growth by promoting blood circulation to the scalp and supplying necessary nutrients. These herbs are as effective as herbs for hair loss but then you cannot expect any miracle, you will have to have patience to see the results.

Remember, once the hair follicles die, reversing the process is simply impossible. Be it herbs for hair loss or herbs for promoting hair growth, you will need to start your treatment pretty soon.

Herb-Infused Oil

This is my Recipe for an Herb-Infused Oil

You will need a glass jar and a plastic tip bottle like those used to apply hair dye.

4 oz. Grapeseed oil
1 oz. Emu oil
1/2 oz. Vegetable glycerin
1/2 oz. Aloe Vera Juice
1/2 tbsp. Horsetail
1/2 tbsp. Nettle
1/2 tbsp. Calendula
1/2 tbsp. Burdock Root
4 Rosehips
Lavender, Chamomile, and Rosemary Essential Oil drops

I placed all the oil and herbs in a glass jar. I placed the jar in a pot of boiling hot water after turning the stove off and and left the herbs in the water until the water cooled. After three days, I poured the mix into my squeeze bottle and added the essential oils. I placed a piece of stocking over the top to act as a strainer during use.

It is recommended that you massage the oil into your scalp every few days.

My testimony: I haven't used the oil consistently in the suggested manner and don't have any more growth than expected within the first year of going natural. Average hair growth is 1/2 inch per month.

Conditioning/Moisturizing Spritz

You will need an 8 to 12 oz spritz bottle. The can be purchased at the dollar store, Target, and Walmart.

2 tbsp. Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner
2 tbsp. Olive Oil
2 tbsp. Vegetable Glycerin
15 Essential Oil Drops
10 Rosemary
3 Chamomile
2 Lavender
Water

Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle, Shake to mix. I usually add warm water of sit in cup of hot water if using distilled/spring water as I find it blend easier when warm. Mix should be shaken before each use as conditioner and oils rise to the top when sitting.

Amla Oil

According to Ayurveda, Amla is one of the best drug meant for the treatment of viccited Pitta-dosha. The same Dosha is also responsible for hair problems such as hair loss and premature greying of the hair. So Amla in form of oil is of great use in these cases.

Amla Oil is one of the world's oldest natural hair conditioners. As an Indian herb, amla oil has been used in India since a very long time. As Indian Ayurveda says, it is used as hair oil basically for its cooling effect.

BENEFITS & USES OF AMLA OIL :

The Truth about Natural Curly, Coily, Kinky Hair

Let us begin with a few basics about natural, aka Napptural, hair. Natural hair is hair that has not had its physical properties altered by chemical processes, including, but not limited to hair relaxers, texturizers, silkeners and jherri curls.

These products alter the natural texture of the hair by breaking down disulfide bonds, which hold together the keratins (proteins) in hair. We won't discuss the ins and outs of permanent chemical processes, rather this article will discuss natural hair and the myths associated with it.

Natural hair comes in many textures. Some natural hair is very tightly coiled; some is more loosely coiled or curled. Some textures have no curl pattern and no definition. Some textures have very visible definition. One head of natural hair alone can have more than one texture. These are all things to consider when talking about natural hair because actual textures vary just as much as the faces that proudly smile beneath it.

MYTH #1: Natural hair is hard to manage.
This myth probably really is number one. There is a huge misconception that naturally curly or coily hair is hard to manage. Simply, it is not. What many people do not understand is that highly-textured hair is very unique, even from looser, naturally curly textures. Any type of hair is hard to manage if it is being 'managed' in such a way that works against its natural texture. Those who embrace the natural texture of their hair often wear styles that compliment that texture, and are not trying to force their hair to do something it will not naturally do. Extreme manipulation of the hair is stressful not only to the hair, but also to the person who is doing the manipulation. Not understanding the natural hair texture is one of the main reasons many people return to relaxers.

MYTH #2: Natural hair is rough and tough.
Natural hair, contrary to obviously popular belief, is neither rough nor tough. Upon looking at a head of luscious nappturalness, some believe that it is rough to the touch. However, actually touching the hair (which is not recommended without consent) may reveal something entirely different. Most, in fact all, natural hair is very soft if properly moisturized and conditioned. African-American hair tends to be dry, but a good moisturizing and conditioning routine will keep the hair moist and soft. Any texture of hair that is denied proper moisture will be dry. Because natural hair is very full and thick, people often assume that it is super strong and tough. This is false. Each and every little bend in the shaft of the hair is a potential breaking point. When handling natural hair, you must be sure to be gentle because it is very delicate. In an Essence magazine article, Rodney Barnett, a trichologist, states, "'Think of your hair as a delicate piece of thread, not as a rope that can be knotted and twisted (30-Day Hair Repair).'"

MYTH #3: Natural hair is trendy.
No doubt many people choose to be natural for a myriad of reasons, including to be stylish or trendy. But in no way should anyone believe that the only reason to be natural is to be trendy or hip. For those of us who have made the decision not to conform to European standards of beauty, this natural is far from a trend. Many naturals have made a very conscientious resolution to love who they are entirely. Giving up caustic and carcinogenic relaxers is, surprisingly, not something that is favored amongst the African-American community. Enduring comments of disgust and disapproval are oftentimes an accepted part of being natural, and there is nothing trendy about that.

MYTH #4: Natural hair grows slowly and does not get long.
This is one of my favorites because it allows me to explain the wonder of highly-textured hair. Natural hair neither grows more slowly nor more quickly than relaxed hair. What naturals must take into account is what is known as shrinkage. Like a telephone cord, natural hair coils up tightly, more or less, thus increasing the surface area within a given length of hair. For example, six inches of relaxed hair is six inches, period. Six inches of tightly coiled hair could be up to twelve inches long when stretched. Natural hair, because of its density and volume, tends to grow big or out, as opposed to lengthy or down, depending on the actual texture of the hair. It is also a myth that the only way natural hair can be long is by locking the hair or wearing twists. This is very untrue.

MYTH #5: Most naturals wear twists and these twists are unattractive because they show the parts in the scalp.
Wrong answer. As with all freshly twisted or braided hair, the parts show the scalp. The beauty and magic of natural hair is that, within a day or even a few hours, the hair swells and gets a little fuzzy, creating a very beautiful and unique style. The only way for relaxed heads to achieve this look is with synthetic kinky twists. Another beautiful thing about twisting or braiding natural hair is that no product is needed. Using relaxed and synthetic hair, the hair must be spritzed with holding spray or burned at the ends to keep it from unraveling. Although companies manufacture loc and twist gels, many nappturals opt out of using any product other than water to twist or braid the hair. The natural coiliness of the hair keeps the hair from completely unraveling, and the style can last for days or even weeks. Twists are only one of many styles that showcase the versatility of napptural hair.

MYTH #6: Natural hair is not accepted in the work place.
While there have been instances of discrimination against those who choose to wear their natural hair, there are more examples of women who are working in all kinds of positions with their naturals. There are doctors, teachers, cashiers, social workers, writers, lawyers, artists, etc. who are proudly wearing their hair and bringing home checks. This is a completely bogus reason for thinking natural hair is unacceptable. Discrimination against natural hair is wrong and should not be tolerated.

MYTH #7 Natural hair makes one an exhibit or a spectacle of some sort; your intelligence will be overlooked.
False and false. If anything, natural hair entails a sense of self-awareness. Naturals are not societal anomalies. While a person may choose to express herself through her hair, no one should feel that natural hair will make her an exhibit. Any natural would find this belief to be highly offensive, not to mention downright incorrect.

Conair Shower Comb

I honestly don't know how I would have survived my first year of being napptural without my $2.49 Conair Shower Comb from CVS. $1.49 if you are lucky enough to find the same comb in the basket below minus the packaging.

The comb has soft wide rubber-coated plastic teeth that glides through the hair distributing conditioner evenly. The tail of the comb is actually a hook that let's you easily hang your comb in the shower.

This comb is my saving grace for in-shower conditioning/detangling sessions. If you have thick, kinky, coarse hair, you have got to invest in one of these.

Update: 2/16/2009 - I snagged two @ $1 each on clearance today at CVS. I'm giving one to my mentor, as she has never heard of the shower comb. She's gonna love it.

Acacia Concinna is a small shrub-like tree which grows in the warm, dry plains of central India. Rules for Growing African American Hair

Unfortunately, very few hair care products available in today’s market cater to curly textured, wavy, or tightly S-coiled hair textures. As a result, individuals, especially African Americans with textured hair are unable to truly experience healthy hair or discover the true lusciousness of Black Hair or Ethnic Hair. Curly or "kinky" hair needs moisture. African American or Ethnic Hair is no different than any other hair type. African American, Biracial, and Ethnic Hair can grow and thrive, even with the application of heat and chemicals (although this should be avoided). Here is a guide on buying Black, Ethnic, or African American hair care products.

Rule #1: Avoid Bad Hair Product Ingredients: Many commercially available hair care products denoted for African American or ethnic hair use harmful ingredients. Be certain to check the ingredients in your hair care products. The following ingredients are awful for ethnic or African American hair, not only stifling African American and Ethnic hair's health, true texture, and hair growth, but also harmful to the body.

1) Isopropyl Alcohol: Dries and Breaks African American or Ethnic hair. It is found in color rinses, anti-freeze

2) Mineral Oil/Petrolatum: It used as a moisturizer in African American or Ethnic hair care products; however, it coats African American or Ethnic hair, actually preventing moisture from getting into the thirsty hair. It is a derivative of crude oil and a cheap industrial grease component. It also prevents the release of toxins from African American or Ethnic hair and alters the skin respiration by preventing oxygen release.

3) Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): Strips African American or Ethnic hair of critical moisture. Used as an emulsifier in products, dissolves oils and grease.

4) Propylene Glycol (PG): An active component in many African American or Ethnic hair care products, make up, lotions, mouthwashes, and deodorant, PG is the active component of anti-freeze and actually deteriorates the protein and cellular structure of African American or Ethnic hair. Protein is what your hair needs to thrive. Workers actually use gloves and goggles when dealing with this substance due to its chemical side effects and toxicity.

5) Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)/ Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): A cheap foaming and thickening agent that strips African American or Ethnic hair of moisture and causes skin and scalp irritation. 95% of all hair shampoos contain this ingredient or a derivative. Avoid it completely; TEA lauryl is just as bad, if not worse. Do not be fooled by the use of the word TEA. Shampooing African American or Ethnic hair with a product that contains these can lead to the absorption of excessive nitrates.

6) Diethanolamine (DEA), Momoethnanolamine (MEA), Triethanolamine (TEA): Usually listed as an ingredient containing a neutralizing compound, i.e. as Cocamide DEA or Lauramide DEA, repeated skin applications of DEA-based detergents are known to form cancer causing nitrates

Rule #2: Avoid Hair Coloring, Rinses, and Dyes. Look on the pack of the ingredient label and check for FD&C Colors: Many individuals with African American or Ethnic hair experience scalp irritation due to these. If you have an irritated scalp ,your hair will not grow long or remain healthy.

Rule #3: Avoid Hair Products with Synthetic Fragrances: Unless natural fragrance, created by items such as essential oils and seasonings, fragrances can include up to 4,000 additional ingredients, specifically more Propylene Glycol that is harmful and damaging to African American or Ethnic hair care. Fragrance can lead to headaches, dizziness, rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing, and vomiting.

Rule # 4: Avoid Products with Chemical Preservatives: Nearly all brands of Black/ African American and Ethnic Skin and Hair Care Products contain hair and health harmful toxins, especially parabens that are used to extend products' shelf lives. While these companies make huge profits, it is at the expense of your hair and health being exposed to cancer causing elements, such as formaldehyde or formaldehyde-donors. According to the Mayo clinic, formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory system, cause skin reactions and trigger heart palpitations.

Rule # 5: Abandon your typical beauty supply store or drugstore. Curly or ethnic hair needs natural hair care products because the sulfates, chemicals, alcohols, and silicones in 99% of hair care products have a moisture stripping effect. Ethnic hair needs moisture to grow, become strong, and stay manageable. Without moisture your hair will become dry and damaged. 10 Synthetic Cosmetic Ingredients To AVOID

If you want natural products, you have to be willing to search them out, to learn to read labels, and to refuse to settle for half-natural hair and skin care. Below I've listed and described my "ten most wanted" � the ten chemicals I most want to see off the labels of so-called natural hair and skin care products.

1. imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea

These are the most commonly used preservatives after the parabens. They are well established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology). Two trade names for these chemicals are Germall II and Germall 115. Neither of the Germall chemicals have a good antifungal, and must be combined withother preservatives. Germall 115 releases formaldehyde at just over 10�. These chemicals are toxic.

2. Methyl and Propyl and Butyl and Ethyl Paraben

Used as inhibitors of microbial growth and to extend shelf life of products. Widely used even though they are known to be toxic. Have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Methyl paraben combines benzoic acid with the methyl group of chemicals. Highly toxic.

3. Petrolatum

I see this on lip products from time to time, which is humorous to me because they're usually advertised as protecting the lips from sunburn, chapping and so forth. Petrolatum is mineral oil jelly, and mineral oil causes a lot of problems when used on the skin photosensitivity (i.e., promotes sun damage), and it tends to interfere with the body's ownnatural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dry skin and chapping. You are being sold a product that creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap.

4. Propylene Glycol

Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant. Has been known to cause allergic and toxic reactions.

5. PVP/VA Copolymer

A petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, wavesets and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic, since particles may contribute to foreign bodies in the lungs of sensitive persons.

6. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

This synthetic substance is used in shampoos for its detergent and foam-building abilities. It causes eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, and allergic reactions. It is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the parenthetic explanation "comes from coconut."

7. Stearalkonium Chloride

A chemical used in hair conditioners and creams. Causes allergic reactions. Stearalkonium chloride was developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, and is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hairconditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which do help hair health. Toxic.

8. Synthetic Colors

The synthetic colors used to supposedly make a cosmetic "pretty" should be avoided at all costs, along with hair dyes. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No.6. Synthetic colors are believed to be cancer-causing agents. If a cosmetic contains them, don't use it.

9. Synthetic Fragrances

The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply say "Fragrance." Some of the problems caused by these chemicals are headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation buy a cosmetic that has the word "Fragrance" on the ingredients label.

10. Triethanolamine

Often used in cosmetics to adjust the pH, and used with many fatty acids to convert acid to salt (stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanser. TEA causes allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.

To Summarize:

Look for natural ingredients in the products you buy. Do not use cosmetics that are artificially colored. Is the shampoo bright green or blue? Very likely it contains a coal tar color. Does the product contain synthetic fragrances? Don't buy it. You may find that some of your allergy problems will suddenly disappear when you no longer use cosmetics formulated with petrochemicals and other synthetics.

Introduction

I was recently asked to research this topic for one of the beauty magazinesthat I write for on a regular basis. The magazine editor asked me to write about carrier oils and to limit my list to "just ten" oils. Although I tried to talk her into letting me write about the top 25 oils, she made me promise to limit myself to just ten oils. UGH. This assignment was pure torture. One thing I have trouble with is limiting myself to ten of anything. When it comes to carrier oils there are so many great ones, that it was frustrating to limit myself to just ten. Although I did my best and based my final list on my own favorites, I realize that I did not get close to covering every great carrier oil that is currently available.

Carrier or fixed oils also known as base oils and vegetable oils are usuallyproduced by cold or expeller method, pressed from seeds, kernels, fruit and nuts. The normal purpose of a carrier oil is to carry and dilute an essential oil for use in massage, or as a hot oil treatment for hair, skin or other parts of the body.There are many benefits to using natural carrier oils as the base ingredientfor conditioning treatments for your hair.

Natural oils provide great benefits to hair by attracting moisture and maintaining it within the cuticle. While there are many different types of natural carrier oils that can be used to treat your hair, the type of oil that you select should depend on your hair type, personal preference, budget and needs. Each oil carries its own signature and has healing effects by themselves.

Hazelnut oil is astringent, macadamia nut oils support suppleness and sesame oil is much heavier. Heavy oils, such as olive and coconut, should be reserved for those with thick, curly, or coarse hair. Lighter oils, such as sweet almond, sesame or grapeseed, are good for fine or thin hair.

One word of warning, some people have allergies to the different ingredients in the various carrier oils. Whether you are allergic to olives or almonds, keep this in mind before trying some of the oils that are listed here.

Listed below are some of the top ten oils to try for hair oiling andconditioning treatments. Keep in mind that there are many more oils available for use and that this list only includes my top ten favorites.

1. Jojoba

Jojoba is the mystical elixir oil of choice for many people suffering from a variety of hair woes. The reason that jojoba is such a great choice as a healing hair conditioner and moisturizer is that the molecular structure of jojoba is very similar to the natural oil or sebum that is produced by the sebaceous glands in the human scalp.

Extremely damaged hair or hair that tends to break, split or tangle usually responds well to jojoba oil. The beauty of this oil is that you can use it straight or in a mix and will work for just about all types of hair.

Depending on your hair type and needs you can buy various compositions that include heavy, medium or light concentrations of the jojoba in the mix. Jojoba oil is extracted from the jojoba bean and it is a liquid wax. Unfortunately in some cases, jojoba can clog pores. Jojoba is very stable and can be stored for years without going rancid. Jojoba oil was also used as a substitute for sperm whale oil and spermaceti what used to be the oil of choice for cosmetics.

2. Olive

This oil expressed from ripe olive fruit has a definite flavor and aroma. Olive oil has been used by people in the Mediterranean region for centuries as a food and cosmetic aide. It is best to only use the olive oil that is created from the first cold pressing which results in the extra virgin oil classification. Avoid the lesser olive oil varieties and consider using organic options if they are available. Beneficial for hair that is dry or damage, this oil work best for coarse, thick hair.

Olive oil is suitable for use in the treatment of scalp conditions and dry skin.It does have quite a distinctive color and odor of its own, which not everyone will appreciate, and it is rather heavy. Some people will find it preferable touse olive oil in combination with another, lighter base oil. Ranges in price from $2.30 for 4 ounces to $25.00 for 1 gallon.

3. Coconut

Coconut and palm kernel oils were recognized as health oils in Ayurvedic medicine almost 4000 years ago. In India, coconut oil has been a favorite oil for skin and hair for many years. There are several types of coconut includingvirgin white, fractionated coconut oil or the exotic Monoi oil (pronounced Mon-oy) that was originated in Tahiti and has been in use for over 2000 years.

The most commonly available coconut oil is Refined, Bleached & Deodorized oil. This oil is produced from copra which is dried coconut meat. Due to the air or sun drying process the resulting oil must be refined, bleached and deodorized in order to make it suitable for human consumption and use. The final product is yellowish-white in color with a thick texture and no taste or odor. At room temperature coconut oil is a solid, white substance with only a faint scent. The oil liquefies when its container is placed in warm water.

Monoi is touted as special because the unusual volcanic soil of the Tahitian islands impart qualities to the ingredients which can not be duplicated anywhere else in the world. Golden yellow color. An elegant moisturizer and superfatting agent. Great for nourishing the hair to give it a healthy shine and fewer tangles it is often recommended for the control of dry scalp and dandruff.

4. Sweet Almond Oil

Popular with the ancient Romans, this very pale yellow and odorless oil from Italy nourishes dry, flaky, itchy, sensitive scalps. Although lighter than olive, this cold pressed oil made from almond kernels provides excellent lubricating and penetrating properties. This oil contains glucosides, vitamins and minerals and it is a favorite carrier oil for aromatherapy massage blends, although it can be used by itself for moisturizing hair and skin.

Midwives have historically used sweet almond oil during pregnancy and labor to prevent rips and tears. Produced primarily in Italy and Spain, it is also produced in California.

Relatively inexpensive at approximately $2.50 for 4 ounces, this normally safe oil should not be used by people who have known almond or nut allegories in order to avoid an unpleasant reaction.

It is important to note that sweet almond oil and bitter almond oil are different. Bitter almond oil should never be used as a base for any type of massage oil because it contains acids that can burn.

5. Sesame Oil

This is a clear oil that is light and comes from Italy. It is made from the uncooked seeds and it is an expressed extraction. It ranges in price from $2.25 to $39.95 for 1 gallon. This oil is known to block approximately 30% of the sun�s UV rays. It can be used to help protect the skin and hair from the sun. This oil is used in many suncare preparations for the hair and body.

Sesame oil, extracted from the raw un-toasted sesame seed, has no aroma and is a light yellow in color. It contains 85% unsaturated and 15% saturated fatty acids. It can be added to other oils to enrich them. Mix with cold-pressed oils like wheat-germ or jojoba to inhibit oxidation of the oil. Sesame becomes rancid quickly and must be stored in a cool place. Some sesame oil is produced from the cooked seed which produces a heavy-scented brown oil. This oil is not recommended skin or hair treatments.

6. Aloe Vera Oil & Gel

Oil from the slightly green tinged, succulent aloe vera desert plant contains one of the most precious substances for human scalps, hair and skin. This odorless oil, which is different from aloe vera gel, is rich in enzymes, vitamins, proteins and minerals that support health.

Not only does aloe vera oil help maintain proper moisture balances, it stimulates circulation which is helpful for hair growth. Excellent for dandruff, this oil will also soothe psoriasis and eczema of the scalp. Aloe vera oil applied to a sunburned, infected or raw scalp will receive special soothing and healing.

Made from an infused process, aloe vera oil is a descendent from an African plant that is now commonly found in the desert areas of the United States. This oil ranges in price from $2.50 for 4 ounces to $19.95 for 1 gallon.

The Aloe Vera plant is a type of lily that has a special ability to retain water. This is an excellent carrier for both oral and topical applications of essential oils.

7. Kukui Nut

Made from the official state tree of Hawaii, kukui nut oil has been used by Hawaiians for hundreds of years. This oil contains essential fatty acids such as linoleic and linolenic acids which are very similar to skin lipids and provide high penetrability and moisturizing benefits to hair and skin. Known to benefit acne, eczema and psoriasis, kukui nut oil can also be used to treatsunburns and chapped skin.

Kukui nut oil can be used alone as a hair and scalp oil or added to shampoo to add special nourishing and softening benefits. More expensive than other oils, kukui ranges in price from approximately $7.50 for 4 ounces to $135.00 for 1 gallon.

8. Shea Butter

This butter is from the kernels of the shea nut tree, Butyrospermum parkii, native to Western Africa. It is a tallow-like substance extracted by hydraulic pressing or screw expellers. In crude form, it can be yellow or grey but is whitish if refined. Shea butter is non-toxic and non-irritating and derived totally from renewable natural resources. Traditionally it has been used in Africa as a medical balm for rheumatism, muscle aches, burns, and light wounds. Its unique fatty acid composition makes it a suitable emollient for many skin care applications, such as baby care products, massage creams, make-up, and similar products. One unique characteristic of shea butter is its content of unsaponiables (up to 8%) which imparts soothing properties and provides extra sun protection.

9. Grapeseed Oil

This oil from Italy has a slight flavor with a slight odor. It is an expressed oil made from the seed. This is one of the lightest oils. The skin absorbs it easily. Good to use as a skin oil or body oil. Slightly astringent and tightens and tones. Does not aggravate acne.

A natural preservative made from extracts of citrus seeds and pulp. Ranges in prices from $3.50 for 4 ounces to $35.00 for 1 gallon.

10. Avocado Oil

This clear oil comes mostly from South America and is made from the fleshy fruit of the avocado. It is an expressed extraction process. Similar to sebaceous fat, the oil quickly merges with it. Touted as a hair growth stimulant, this oil nourishes and restores dry, dehydrated and mature hair and skin. Great for healing dry or permed hair. Problems, especially psoriasis of the scalp, respond to its high content of vitamins A, B and E along with lecithin, proteins and fatty acids. Avocado oil has its own distinct aroma and extracted from the flesh of the avocado. An excellent softener, it is easily absorbed.

It goes rancid quickly. Buy in small amounts and refrigerate. Ranges in prices from $3.50 for 4 ounces to $60.00 for 1 gallon.

An alterative to pure avocado oil is avocado pear oil which is an oil made from the fruit of both avocados and pears. It is an expressed extraction process. Ranges in prices from $3.50 for 4 ounces to $45.00 for 1 gallon.

11. Safflower This is a clear oil that is light and comes from Guatemala. It is made from the seeds and is is an expressed extraction. It ranges in price from $2.50 to $22.95 for 1 gallon. This oil has a light texture and penetrates the skin well. It is cheap and readily available in an unrefined state, making it a useful oil base for a blend.

Summary Other great hair oils include Black Current Seed Oil and Borage Seed Oil fordry, dehydrated, mature hair. Can be priced at $350 per gallon for both.

Chemicals to Avoid

1.LYE AND NO LYE (SODIUM/CALCIUM/POTASSIUM/GUANIDINE HYDROXIDE)

Used
in hair relaxers to make hair permanently straight. Powerful alkaline
and caustic ingredient. Used in cleaning products that help dissolve
debris including hair from drains.

FACT: Breaks the protein
bonds that give the hair strength. Depletes the scalp of sebum (natural
oils) and makes hair very weak and prone to breakage. If used
incorrectly, can cause severe damage to the scalp. Products that say
“no-lye” just substitute the sodium hydroxide with calcium or guanidine.

Found in: Chemical straighteners, soaps

2. SODIUM LAURYL/LAURETH SULPHATE (SLS/SLES) AMMONIUM LAURETH
SULPHATE (ALES). (any sulphate, for that matter)

Used
in 99% of all shampoos for foam. These are the same ingredients found
in many cleaning products such as floor cleaners and car engine
de-greasers.

FACT: Dries and irritates the skin and hair by
stripping it of natural oils. Prevents the natural regulation of
moisture. (Why do you think we have to use conditioner after washing
our hair?)

Found in: shampoo/conditioner, bar soap, body wash,
face cleanser, liquid hand soap, acne treatment, hair dye, mascara,
shaving products, moisturizer, toothpaste, sunscreen, makeup remover,

3.MINERAL OIL AND PETROLEUM/PETROLATUM

FACT:
Derives from crude oil (the same ingredient used to cut metal!). Coats
the hair shaft and clogs pores thereby preventing toxins from being
released. This also prevents other ingredients to penetrate into the
hair shaft.

Found in: Almost every personal care product,
especially creams, lotions, hair products, wax depilatories, eyebrow
pencils, eye shadow, liquid powder, and lipstick.

4. PROPYLENE/POLYTHYLENE GLYCOL (PG/PEG)

Used
because it is called a humectant gives the product a firmer
consistency. Keeps product from melting in high heat or freezing when
it is cold.

FACT: Active ingredient in anti-freeze which is used
in car brake fluid. Strong enough to remove barnacles from boats! It
slowly destroys the protein and cellular structure and can lead to
dermatitis.

Found in: shampoo/conditioner, bar soap, body wash,
face cleanser, liquid hand soap, acne treatment, hair dye, shaving
products, moisturizer, makeup remover, toothpaste, sunscreen, perfume,
cologne, deodorant, toner/astringent, foundation, bronzer powder, nail
polish, lip products, eye shadow/pencil, and mascara.

5. DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), & TEA (triethanolamine)

Used to adjust the PH balance

FACT:
These chemicals are already restricted in Europe due to the known
creation of carcinogenic compounds called nitrosamines. They are
hormone-disrupting chemicals that easily absorb into the skin.

Found
in: shampoo, body wash/cleansers, bath oils, facial cleanser, liquid
hand soap, bar soap, hair products, acne treatment, baby wash, shaving
products, body scrubs, foot odor/cream/treatment, deodorant,
moisturizer, and hair dye/spray.

6. ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL

Used as a cleaning agent and disinfectant

FACT: better known as rubbing alcohol. Known to dry out and break off hair

7. DIMETHICONE/COPOLYOL/CYCLOMETHICONE (and any ingredient ending in “cone”)

Used
as emollients (skin softeners), as lubricants, as thickeners, and as
volatile liquids that make coatings feel smooth, but evaporate without
leaving a greasy residue.

FACT: Coats the hair shaft thereby
preventing moisture from penetrating. Weighs the hair down and
contributes to build-up. They can accumulate in the liver and lymph
nodes and promote the development of tumors.

Found in: hair products, conditioner, shampoo and many other cosmetics.

6. (BUTYL; ETHYL; METHYL; PROPYL) PARABEN

Used as a preservative for a longer shelf live and to prevent the growth of mold and mildew.

FACT:
There is an ongoing debate as to harmful effects of these parabens and
whether or not they are carcinogens because they act like estrogen. The
fact remains they accumulate in the bloodstream.

Found in:
moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, hair products hair styling gels,
nail creams, foundations, facial masks, skin creams, deodorants, and
baby lotions.

8. FD&C (Food, Drug and Cosmetic) COLOR PIGMENTS

Used to add color to products.

FACT: Synthetic colors made from coal tar. They contain heavy metal salts that penetrate into the scalp and skin.

9. SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES

Used to make products smell appealing

FACT:
Manufactures are not required to list what the synthetic fragrances
are. Some ingredients may cause irritation and sickness such as rashes
and headaches to sensitive people.

10. YOU

A consumer just looking to make their body look and feel better

FACT:
Companies and businesses rely on your ignorance to continue selling
their products. Their main goal is to have the cheapest production cost
possible (using synthetic, artificial and chemically altered
alternatives) thereby increasing their profit margins. All of this is
done at the expense of your health and well being.
